The client desired their retirement home to
have warm, yet open spaces filled with natural light, and
taking advantage of the spectacular natural views; to the
southwest a lush, steep ravine, to the northwest a panoramic
lake. The siteing, and relatively mild climate allowed
for passive heating and cooling strategies via sun and site
orientation (large overhangs to the south and west), a
geothermal loop, and thermal lag; mass walls to the south, and
a massive stone chimney acting as a "sunspace" which
gathers radiation through the southern & western
clerestoreys, filtering it in the spring & fall, and
re-radiating it on those cold winter nights. Operable
clerestorey glazing allows stack venting during the warmer
days. NEXT--->
